About Mountain House
Oregon Freeze Dry is the actual name of the company that produces the Mountain House brand of freeze-dried food. Mountain House has been around for so long that most people don’t even know Oregon Freeze Dry is the actual name of the company.
Mountain House is literally the godfather of the freeze-dried food industry. It first started making food for General Mills and later for the Department of Defense back in the 1960′s. Ever wonder how all of these food storage companies can claim their products have 25 year + shelf lives? It’s because they refer to actual Mountain House product that really was packaged back in the 1980′s.
Many food storage retailers will either resell Mountain House freeze-dried products or include them in their food storage packages. Mountain House is the best, but it is also on the more expensive side. And don’t bother trying to get Mountain House cheaper by going straight to the company’s website. Mountain House has strict MAP (minimum advertised price) pricing it enforces on itself to ensure the integrity of its distributor relationship.
In the past year, Mountain House has made more of an effort to truly market its own products rather than rely on the traditional reseller market. We expect to see this continue in the future. We also believe Mountain House will get “choosier” in regards to which resellers it will do business with.
Our Opinion
In our opinion, Mountain House food is the gold standard in freeze-dried food. You can absolutely be sure the product is great tasting and will last at least 25 years. Since the Mountain House website rarely advertises discounts, we recommend checking with one of their best resellers, Nitro-Pak, to find the best deals on this amazing food.

What more can I say – it is Mountain House. Have used it for years backpacking. After looking at all the food storage companies we opted for the more expensive but tastier Mountain House. Had to do a lot of shopping around to get an overall good price. Now we have food storage we know tastes good – last long – and can rotated out through they years on back packing trips. Not to mention that it is 100% freeze dried and they use meat in their products – not imitation!

100% real meat is added, no preservatives, completely tasty, all you have to add is water and boil. LOVE the Mac and cheese. You’ll never find a better deal than mountain house.

Mountain House fits a need in the marketplace well. It is expensive though and the ingredients list looks like a chemistry exam. They claim they don’t add MSG but there are ingredients in many of their products that are MSG but by other names…….such as hydrolized ingredients. For folks like me who get migraines from MSG this is bad news.
